Chapter Five

Name ____________________________                  Date _______________________

During chapter five, Cassie went downstairs to ask her Grandfather more questions.  While she was gone, Caleb remarked that he “could hear Cassie’s voice down in the kitchen going on and on like the wind.”

·        What did Caleb mean when he described Cassie’s voice as “the wind”?

·        Knowing what you know about Cassie, are you surprised she’s acting like this now that she has a Grandfather?  Explain your thinking using text-relevant support.

Clearly Caleb’s father isn’t happy that John is at the farm.  His presence has caused a lot of tension around the house.  For example, when Sarah was encouraging Jacob to be forgiving of his father, he raised his voice to response to express his frustration that his father left him when he was younger than Caleb.

·        Keeping in mind the mood of Jacob, explain why Caleb “took a breath” before saying “Cassie wonders why you aren’t happy to see your father.  If you thought he was dead.”  You must provide text-relevant support to explain your thinking.
